Services
The 15, 000-square-foot (1, 340 square meters) Spa at Culloden underwent a thorough renovation in 2005 that added five new treatment rooms (bringing the total to eight rooms) and two relaxation areas, in addition to expanding the refreshment and lounge areas. The resulting space is spacious and serene, with subdued lighting and a muted color scheme to promote meditation and personal reflection. Visitors begin their spa experience in the tranquil Dawn relaxation room and conclude it in the candlelit Dusk area, where they can languish on opulent relaxation beds. Spa therapists use ESPA products and holistic therapies to address the individual needs of clients. The signature Celtic Recovery treatment reduces stress with an exclusive ESPA blend of essential oils applied in a full-body massage. A deep-cleansing facial completes the rejuvenating experience. Additional wellness-focused treatments include the ESPA Chakra Balancing with Hot Stones, a 110-minute service designed to stimulate the chakras through hot stone aromatherapy massage, and a series of body wraps formulated to address specific complaints, e.g. muscle tension and low energy. A suite of specialty men's offerings is also available. The spacious fitness suite houses state-of-the-art cardiovascular and weight-training equipment as well as two exercise studios where classes such as spinning, yoga, and aerobics are held. A clear glass ceiling above the indoor leisure pool provides swimmers with natural light and unimpeded sky views. The pool is equipped with a contra-flow mechanism that simulates current for a more vigorous water-bound workout.
Activities
Culloden's location in the Holywood hills allows its guests convenient access to both the strikingly beautiful Irish countryside and the nearby city of Belfast. The 12-acre grounds encompass numerous opportunities for nature walks and gentle hikes, from a stroll through immaculate gardens to a wind-blown walk along the shoreline of picturesque Belfast Lough. Inside, antique enthusiasts can gape at the hotel's stained-glass windows and Louis XV chandeliers, among other opulent 19th-century touches. Guests can also relax, fireside, in several neoclassical vaulted lounges. Next door, the Royal Belfast Golf Club gives hotel guests privileged tee times on its highly praised parkland course. Deriving its name from the patronage of the British monarchy, the Club was first established in the 1880s and is widely credited with introducing golf to Ireland. Of special interest to golf enthusiasts is the 415-yard first hole, which rises to an infamously difficult green. In addition, the Blackwood Golf Centre, Helen's Bay, Bangor, and Clandeboye golf courses are within easy driving distance of the hotel. The nearby village of Holywood teems with authentic Irish handicrafts and antiques. Adjacent to the property, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum features more than 50 exhibits detailing the lifestyle and traditions of the region as well as illustrating how Northern Ireland has changed over time. Belfast is just a few minutes' drive or a quick train ride from the hotel, offering boutique shopping, cultural attractions, and historical sites.
