Wedding Story
• HOTEL Just south of Londonderry, surrounded by 32 acres of peaceful woodland, waterfalls and gardens, this house dates from 1729 and retains many of its original details. There are plenty of churches to choose from in the area but the hotel is licensed to hold weddings, so you can opt to have the ceremony in the hotel (the Library, once the private chapel of the Skipton family who built the house, makes a fine setting for small numbers) or in the grounds - which also provide romantic settings for photographs. Proprietor Patsy O'Kane is an hospitable and caring hostess and her ever-growing collection of antiques adds character to the hotel, which includes a comfortably traditional bar and a very pleasing restaurant in what was previously a snooker room - now extending into a conservatory area, it is well-positioned overlooking the gardens and makes a lovely wedding venue for up to 100 guests. Very small weddings (up to 20) can be hosted in the Library, while medium sized parties (up to 82) can use Skipton Hall which, with its intricate plasterwork, high ceiling and tall windows giving views across the gardens, is the grandest option. A marquee is also possible for larger weddings and, regardless of size, there will only be one wedding taking place at any time. The hotel has always taken pride in its good food, and menus are planned in consultation with the bride and groom; a wedding cake service is available, if plenty of notice is given. It is up to the bride and groom to organise extras like special transport, a piper or other special welcome and the band or DJ, but the hotel can make recommendations. Guest rooms and suites are traditional in style and include a fine bridal suite with a four-poster; no minimum number of rooms must be taken, but the wedding party must stay for 2 nights - an attractive package is offered (see below) and exclusive use of the hotel is possible if all rooms are booked. VENUE & EVENT Capacity 20-100 (more with marquee); minimum number 70 for restaurant, no minimum for other rooms; venue hire charges: Library £150, Skipton Hall £200, restaurant and conservatory £350, marquee, no hire charge; booking deposit P.O.A; no mid-week reduction; wedding party must stay for 2 nights • Menus P.O.A; no supplement for choices; dessert is mandatory; wedding cake service available • Champagne P.O.A; house wine £12.95; no corkage offered • Evening guests welcome; finger food from £6.50 pp; residents bar available • Children welcome; half portions; babysitter available • ACCOMMODATION Rooms 27 (see story); guest discount on accommodation; Special rate £110 pps for 2 nights B&B & 1 dinner • FACILITIES/ACTIVITIES Beauty treatments, gym, sauna, steam room, walking, gardens and tennis on site; golf, equestrian and fishing available locally; beaches, Derry City, Giant's Causeway nearby; 2/3 day activity programmes can be arranged for guests • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Wheelchair accessible • Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Switch • Open all year except Christmas Day • Helipad • AIRPORTS (km): Derry 20; Belfast Int 95; Dublin 223; Shannon 227 • Directions: On main Belfast -Derry road, N6.
