• COUNTRY HOUSE John and Louise Mathers' fine Georgian country house is less than half an hour's drive southwest of Belfast yet, in a wonderful setting of mature trees, gardens and green fields on the edge of the quiet village of Magheralin, it feels like worlds away. After major renovations the Mathers opened John's former family home as a guesthouse in 2005, and it now offers luxurious en-suite accommodation in stylish, individually decorated rooms (almost all with separate bath and shower), a period Drawing Room with an open log fire and a fine Dining Room where the meals John bases mainly on local and organic produce are served. It makes a perfect setting for weddings, and there are two interesting churches nearby; wedding blessings (fee £100) can be held here too - in the Dining Room, (max 40 guests), or in a marquee on the front lawn (up to 130 guests). John and Louise work directly with the bride and groom, to plan every detail of the event and, although some services - such as arrangements for transport - are not offered, others, like a piper or other special welcome, can be arranged on request (charges apply). The reception takes place in the Dining Room or a combination of Dining Room, Entrance Hall and Drawing Room if exclusive hire of the house is chosen - and what a very lovely venue this is.
